MyNameIsNotRachel says: This little kitten showed up on my co-worker's front porch and by the following afternoon he and his daughter Sophia had brought it over to my house. We're calling it Sophia's Kitten because 1) I don't know if this is a boy kitten or a girl kitten (I estimate it is only about 4-5 weeks old), and 2) to convince Sophia's dad that the kitten really should stay with them! I have a 14-year-old Siamese/tabby mix and a 9-year-old black cat and definitely do not need another cat right now. My co-worker also has two cats, but also two children, so that's how I ended up with Sophia's Kitten. I plan to foster it until I find it a forever home. The kitten is very happy, outgoing, curious, and affectionate. It purrs like crazy and it constantly "kneading" with its front paws (I suspect it is looking to nurse on something and so I need to ask my vet about supplements for it). It is just so teeny-tiny and adorable and I know it will make a great pet to a deserving home! So if you live anywhere near Atlanta and are looking for a kitten, please let me know!

To sex a cat, look between its back legs. If it's got a circle or kind of a cone there, it's a boy. If there's a straight line, front to back, it's a girl.

It needs cat's milk; cow's milk like we drink will not give it the immunities it would have gotten from its mother. Unless, of course, it already got enough of that from its mother...

Kneading is a practice you're likely to see in any adult cat, it's one of the ways they express pleasure or happiness. "False nursing" is one of the symptoms of being removed from the mother too early, and it's difficult to stop - one way you can help with a kitten (Sophia's Kitten looks to be maybe a couple of months old) is by bottle-feeding it, and giving it special attention to help it feel like it's getting the attention of a mother kitty (it's also a great way to bond with a kitten). The kitten looks old enough to not need the antibodies from its momma, but it should get it's vaccinations as soon as a vet thinks it's old enough.

We have an adult cat who still fake-nurses on occasion (he and his sibs were rescues) and we have some rescued kittens now that need the additional attention, because we had to take them from their mothers early (because a cat-hater neighbor was going to kill them).
Even if the kitten continues to fake-nurse, it's likely to slack off over time, especially with love and attention - and it can be cute (although leaving damp spots on things like blankets).
