Eva says: My foster kitten Lucas stepped in his poop. He was bathed in pet shampoo Mango Tango. He did not make a peep but trembled like a leaf. He was towel dried, blow dried, and hugged. He snuggled and purred himself to sleep. When he woke he completely forgot his traumatic experience. Alas he smelled like mango tango!

People! Stop bathing and traumatizing your cats. The DON'T need it. They can keep perfectly clean themself.

Bender, cats may keep themselves perfectly clean and no one will discuss that... but if a kitty steps on its own poop, even if it's not amusing for the animal, you should rather put the cat under water and soap if you don't want the house to look like a shi--y Kelme ad... among others...

When my girls came to our home as babies, we had no option but to bathe them every day due to them being quite sick with fleas, mites, infection, etc. Today, they're both FINE - and don't mind being in the rain or getting wet. It's true, we no longer bathe them since they're 'grown', but when little, sometimes they need it! Lucas is PRECIOUS and lucky to have a good foster mom who cares about his health and cleanliness. :-)
Cassy -
That poor kitty!!! Cats dont need baths! They clean themselves!!!
Symeezgurl -
Cats can survive bathing just as well as dogs do and they are quite happy about it afterwards. They get over the trauma as quick as you can say You can not touch The Mango! Thanks for showing the proper way to bathe a cat!!

Awww ... such a sweet baby! I had to bathe a kitty regularly b/c of fleas (back in the days before good anti-flea meds) and he learned to endure it pretty well. Lots of licks, purrs and snuggles afterward just like Lucas. Awww!!! so, so cute!

For those who don't think you should ever bathe a cat, you are wrong. Bathe a cat with cat-appropriate shampoo when the filth is not something to be ingested (such as its own or others' feces), there is way too much for self-cleaning or has a medical problem (my cat referenced above was very allergic to flea droppings, so suffered greatly w/o bathing). Give Eva a break for goodness sake!

I bathe mine on occasion as it also helps with their shedding and calms the occasional dandruff outbreak.

bender- when kittens are little they don't know how to bathe themselves- i raised a litter of abandoned kittens and in the beginning it was often necessary when one kitten would suck on the genitals of another which stimulated defecation all over the suckling kittens face. no way was i going to expect it to lick all that off, even if he could have!!!

cats are only traumatized if they've NEVER been bathed; they can take care of their own daily grooming, but every so often it's good for them to have a bath, just like dogs. If you get kittens used to it it makes it easier as they get older and it's something a mother cat would do, just don't submerge them, that's what freaks them out...if you wipe their face they lick in response like they would with a mother cat....

I bathed both of my cats, and there was no "trauma". They would actually jump IN the tub. Every cat is different... generalizations probably don't help too much.
Piper -
Kittens are too young to be able to bathe themselves properly. Furthermore, you're protesting her washing off poop? You would rather have her baby ingest its own poop? That is abuse. The kitten is adorable and is no worse for the wear. Mangoes, ftw!
Etna -
What is with all the crying and whining about bathing cats? Yes, they do an exemplary job of bathing themselves, but certain circumstances can arise where it's 100% necessary to bathe a kitty! Just because it can be somewhat stressful on the cat doesn't mean it shouldn't happen.

What a sweet, and then sweet smelling lil boyo. Well done, Foster Mommie.

Hmmm. I guess if we took away all things that 'traumatized' kitties, we should stop vetting them, as well, then? A responsible owner=a well/well loved kitty. Your soapboxes can't even begin to support "don't ever bathe a cat" cam-'pain'. Jeeze.

I had a kitten that decided to jump on the counter and wade through a pan of (cooled) baked chicken, in the process getting covered with chicken grease.

Boy, did she need a bath, and she still smelled faintly of chicken for a day or two afterwards.

I've also had cats step in poop and had to swish their feet in a few inches of bath water to clean them off. They didn't mind much because the water was warm.

Sometimes
Bender -
I fail to see how stepping into poop had to end with bathing his entire body. Did he rolled over that poop or something? Also he doesn't look like 1-2 weeks kitten, that "can't clean himself".
But suit yourself.

Well, as far as I am concerned, the foster-kitty "parents" did what was necessary to clean off the poop. Why don't we just focus on how cute the little guy is instead of arguing over the bath.

Sooo cute! And it is appropriate to give kitties bathes occasionally. If they're abaondoned early they may not have the basics of cleaning down even at a slightly older age. I got one my mine at 8 weeks off the street but he had been on his own for ages and didn't have the cleaning thing down.

Also, kitty purry - what kind of kitties do you have that don't lick you? Mine try to clean me CONSTANTLY. Silly rough kitty tongues. :-)

absolutely freakin' adorable! Lucas is just a darling!

as to the debate about bathing cats, I know a cat that LOVES to sit under cars. as a result he gets covered in motor oil. would people prefer that he lick himself clean and get poisoned by the oil, or get a quick bath in warm water then a good old snuggle in a pre-warmed towel and as much time in front of the heater as he likes?

sometimes bathing a cat is necessary.

Tiny kittens don't know how to bathe themselves yet, so they do need to be washed. Normally their mother would wash them with her tongue, but if the mother isn't around, it's the human "parent's" job to do the washing.

Lucas looks like he was old enough to sort of clean himself, but not very well. Furthermore, no matter what we think we know about whether cats can clean themselves, one thing's for sure: if a cat is walking around with poop stuck to his fur, that particular cat doesn't know how to clean himself properly, at least not yet.

Diana; agreed, kitty purry; my cat would give me baths himself if I stuck around. We returned the favor, especially when he got a cut on his leg and had to wear "the Cone of Shame" to prevent him from licking it and getting it infected again. So, people bathing their cats is not all too big a deal, if they follow the proper guidelines. Also, cute pictures. Go Lucas, little cutie!!
