Dan says: Ginger started hanging around our neighborhood December 2007. I saw her a few times and she always ran away. But on a rainy February night she seemed so wet, miserable, and distressed. I sat in the rain for 20 minutes chatting with her and she finally came to me. She rubbed against me. I scratched her head. We became friends. That night she decided she could trust us and came in the garage to dry off and get warm. She loved it and by the next day she was crawling all over me. So she became OUR cat, but was still so independent and loved (required) to go outside. I guess she was someone's pet, but she had clearly been wild for some time.

One thing though -- she did not tell us she was knocked up! As she got bigger and bigger, we got ready for her birthing, but one night in April she left in the middle of the night. We looked everywhere for her, but to no avail. Then about a month later, I saw her sneak into house and slink upstairs with something dark in her mouth. I opened some doors and waited and eventually she brought home four kittens. :-) Three boys and a girl. We raised those four kittens in the spare bedroom she put them in. We had a blast! Socks was a very sociable boy. Layla was the only girl and did everything first. First to eat solid food, first to use the litterbox. She also look very much like our cat Sweetie who we lost to cancer. They were all really so playful. When the kittens were about four months, GinGin decided she wanted nothing to do with them and she moved away. She's back to being wild and lives about five houses down the block from us. I've seen her only twice in six months. (She hit me up for free spaying and kitty care... no problem...)

Socks went to a great home with my coworker and got a new name: Nugget. Polar Bear went to a friend of a friend and is now growing up with a small dog. I hear he has developed into a Siamese like his mom but has his dad's tail -- it's ringed like a raccoon! We kept Layla and Max and they are now part of our happy family.

#Dan, you have a beautiful family! I read your story several times but could not find the male cat wth striped tail or did you just imagine him. And I would have kept Polar Bear gladly.

Your story was very moving. Ginger had a mind of her own and only stayed with you and her kittens till she went back to her wild ways. I know human moms like that--usually they are called celebrities.

They are all beautiful kittens and so is GinGin but Layla is the one I would have snatched up for myself.
