Wendy says: When we brought Phoebe home, we were hoping our older cats Elsa and Wally would bond with her. Well, that didn't go to plan, so after a few months we decided that we would find another kitty for Phoebe to befriend, and along came Ruby, who is a shorthaired tortie. There are four months to the day between them and they bonded with each other from day one! They play and chase, they groom and sleep together as if it was always meant to be. The lastest game is tree climbing. It really is a treat for us to enjoy our two very happy playful kitties. Wally and Elsa tolerate them but prefer to keep their distance, but we love them just as much. And with four cats in the house, there's always one who wants to sit on a lap.

I think Ruby is a calico. I have a tortie and she is black with shades of orange. Your Phoebe looks like a dilute tortie (lighter color tortie). Calico have been my favorite coloring all my life. Beautiful girl you have there!

Wonderful friends! So cute together. According to wikipedia :-) , calico is a subset of tortoiseshell- so she is both a tortie and a calico!

Awww...I can't believe you too have a calico kitten named Ruby! I too have a Ruby (Ruby Tuesday Rose)...she is 7 months old and just as cute as your Ruby! Phoebe (which is another great name btw) is so beautiful too! I just love those calicoes!

What a big difference, 4 months of growth makes. Ruby looks so tiny next to her sister. I am so glad that Phoebe has Ruby to hang out with. In an odd number house-hold, sometimes 2 catties will gang-up on the loner. You had the best solution for all concerned. Ruby is precious!

I have a calico named Clare who did this too as a kitten. She'd run around the notebook's keyboard and actually sent an email one day. That's why one of her nicknames is e-Clare.

I was always told that torties are white cats with larger spots, usually 2-3 other colors and can vary from mostly white to mostly spotted, while calicoes are other-than-white-colored with small ticks of many other colors in their fur, much like calico fabric, which has a solid background with tiny multicolored flowers in an all over pattern. So, by that definition, Ruby is a tortie.
