Debby says: Two years ago I moved to Moloka'i, Hawaii, for three months to do some mending and healing. This little trio of feral cats were my first friends and kept me company as I settled in in the middle of the Pacific. It was love at first sight, as the little white girl and her two siblings greeted me my first morning there by climbing the screened door of my condo. I became their main source of food and water, and by the time I left three months later, she would let me pick her up for about two seconds (!), and whenever I opened the door, she would scoot past me inside. They were always waiting for me first thing in the morning, and whenever I returned after being away for a time. I ended up calling her Moloka'i and just referred to her brothers as "your brothers" when I was talking to her. I thought long and hard about bringing Moloka'i home when my stay in Hawaii was over, but in the end knew I couldn't and I arranged for others to feed these three sweet little beings after I left. I missed her and her brothers so much!
Thinking and writing about her brings back the happy, happy memories of my time there. Though it's also really sad, as there is a huge feral cat population on the west end of the island. But also there are very caring folks living there that feed and water and try to spay and neuter and take them to the clinic when they are ill…
