Marianne says: Georgia is a six-week-old kitten that was rescued along with her three brothers. There are three orange and one buff color in the litter. Georgia is the only girl. They were the babies of a stray mom, a cat that the neighbors think was abandoned when her family moved out. A young couple could not stand to hear the mother cat crying and begging for food and shelter, so they took her in and allowed her to have her babies. Helen Sanders CatPAWS received a call from the couple when the babies were about to be weaned and we took the kittens in and put them in our foster care, but we also paid for the mother cat to be spayed, and now the young couple has adopted the mom and she is their cat. CatPAWS would have made sure that the mother found a home as well, as we don’t believe in taking kittens and leaving a mother cat to fend for herself. But in this case it worked out great and we didn’t have to find an adopter for her.

Georgia and her brothers are some of the lucky ones… the kittens that get rescued and taken into foster care until they are adopted and in the meantime get the best medical care and food. I wish all kittens and cats could be saved but of course that will never be. The tragedy is that there are so many avenues that people can take to get a low-cost or sometimes even free spay/neuter for their pet or any pet that needs it, and yet despite this, there are those that have pets and never bother to get them fixed. I’m not sure if it’s laziness or ignorance or possibly a little of both, but it’s sad that so many cats are out there, not fixed and having litter after litter, and some of these cats are family pets.

Georgia is beautiful and so precious!! It is painful to hear momma kitty was crying for love, shelter, and food. Kudos to the young couple who took her in and cared for her and let her have her babies in a safe loving place; and gave her a fur-ever home. CatPAWS did an awesome job caring for and getting homes for momma's babies. I will never understand why some people think is okay to abandon their pets ... I strongly believe it is criminal!

Sometimes it's laziness or ignorance, but often it's the idea that "cats are just animals and can make it fine on their own" and "cats have strong instincts and can survive on their own" - both false of course, combined with not wanting to spend any energy or resources on something other than the person. Then too, people often consider pets like toys - something to have but discard when they become less "fun". Add to that the fact that a lot of people project themselves onto their pets and you get comments like "How DARE you suggest I take away her womanhood/his manhood??!!!" They don't hear when you tell them that cats (and dogs) live longer and are happier if they're fixed.

One other issue that comes out of all that - often shelters will rant and rail at people who are kind enough to feed someone else's dropoffs, blaming them for their pregnancy and then wanting help. (I am reluctant to talk to people who work at shelters for that reason.) The shelters also vary greatly from county to county - and this hellhole they KILL cats (and there are barriers and always rising prices for TNR for kitties).

Kudos for taking care of those cuties! Georgia looks just like my Sunshine, an orangie who was the offspring of a dropoff!

You are so right about people not getting cats spayed/neutered. Myself and a neighbor had several feral/strays fixed that were living in our back woods, and we no longer have a feral cat problem. It's everyone's responsibility. I took 2 of the kittens in and they are wonderful pets. Thank you for taking care of these cats, so glad they are safe and have homes. Georgia is a beautiful little girl.

Sadly, too many people look at cats as throwaway animals. Dogs are great and wonderful and members of the family, but cats, well they are making them every day! If I had a nickel for every time I heard that line, I could retire and start my own cat rescue.

Heartwarming story of how everyone worked together to save the mom and her kitties. Georgia in this photo looks so feisty and daring. What a love.
