Michelle says: The Scooby gang were rescued from the local shelter along with their very young mom, India. She wasn't nursing them and her milk had dried up, so a volunteer took them from the shelter with their mom, and two of us foster caregivers took two each to bottle-feed. Then I took all four back for a few weeks to get them completely weaned. Juliet, another foster cat, quickly adopted the babies and cared for them as though they were here own babies. And the kittens totally loved her! Scooby Doo was so small... we kept marveling at how small he was compared to his litter mates; kind of like a little pygmy kitten. And he had a bad upper respiratory infection. But with antibiotics and a lot of tlc, he grew up to be an amazing and healthy kitten. He was eventually adopted into a loving home.

Can I ask - honest question - why do so many of the photos of these adorable fuzzballs when they're -really- young (like the top few here) always seem to have grubby faces? Is there a specific reason people don't clean them up a bit, i.e. best to let 'mum' do it or leave it to them? Not that it matters 'cos they're adorable regardless, just noticed a pattern and wondered why :)

A kitten as tiny as a puffball? Once they grow up it's hard to remember they were ever this tiny. My kitten came with a pink ponytail holder as a collar! Now she's about 4 lbs. big. Scooby grew up to be a handsome boy.

Rogahar: I have fostered dozens of kittens. Kittens without moms can look pretty scruffy at times. Moms usually do the grooming of their babies for the first couple of months and young orphans haven't picked up the routine grooming that adult cats engage in.

I used to say, "Anyone who thinks cats are clean animals has never been around kittens." Most of my orphaned kittens were like the Peanuts character "Pigpen" -- within five minutes of a cleanup, they had stepped in something or had stuck their face back into the food dish, or had wandered into a tight space where cobwebs lurked. So yeah, they could look grubby! Doesn't mean they weren't being cleaned regularly by their foster moms... just that kids will be kids.

P.S. Kittens often have upper respiratory infections with runny eyes and crusty noses. Keeping their faces clean is a full-time job. I think the transformation of this little waif from scruffy little fuzzball to sleek youngster makes the photos all the more poignant.

It is so cool to follow kitties when they are first babies, and then with proper nutrition and lots of TLC, they grow into more beautiful cats:):):)

As a parent to two very small rescue kitties who are now gorgeous (if I say so myself) cats, I can vouch for them having had runny noses and dirty faces when they were little. Scooby is a beautiful boy! Love black cats! :-)

it's fun to see our foster babies on here and have everyone enjoy the photos--we took them for our own memories and to help them get adopted; glad to share them with everyone. *grin*

What a precious baby! Kittens are all adorable, but black kittens have a special place in my heart somehow.:) We found one just like him in the middle of a busy intersection at 4 in the morning. He is now a big lovable boy and such an awesome cat.

There is always a good supply of kitten food, therefore a good supply of messy faces, especially when they are in it just to be like Mom and not to eat.

pwillow1: thanks! I knew there was bound to be a good reason for it but I've never owned a cat younger than about a year and a half old, so they've always been straight into the self-groomed-to-perfection bit, hehe. Still, the semi-grubbiness of the really young ones is a very "young creature" kind of thing anyway - after all, what kid likes taking baths? :D
