Shelter Kitty

Elizabeth and Andrew W. say: This is just one of many of the kitties that we've photographed at Blacktown city pound, a high-kill shelter in Sydney, Australia. But they are so busy and sometimes the hurried photos on their Web site don't show the kitties off in their best light. So we volunteer by going to the shelter and taking the best portraits we can of the cats there. We then post the photos on our Flickr page and our Facebook page Pound Cats, in the hope that we can help find at least a few of them forever homes. If anyone would like to adopt this little beauty, please contact Blacktown city pound and refer to the number on her collar. But please hurry. Around 90% of the cats going in do not come out.

Aww, I love her! I don't think she's creepy at all, just resigned to staying there until the right human comes along! Thank you so much for taking great photos - you are right, it does make a huge difference to how many people want to adopt an animal. It shouldn't, but it does.

She's beautiful! I'd take her in a heartbeat - if only I wasn't on the other side of the world - in Virginia. If I could get to her, or get her to me she'd be mine! I have a soft spot for tortie and whites and this little beauty looks like she and I could be BFFs!!

you're doing a great work by helping out with your photos! thank you for trying to help as good as you possibly can. I hope that many of the cats find a home and I hope people will get wiser and start spaying and neutering and stop throwing cats out. It's so sad to see all these wonderfull purrsons have to face an untimely end :( so thanks again... to you and anyone in the world who helps and adopts and cares.

We love this shelter kitty and want to know if someone gave her a home. Can you imagine having the job of killing unwanted kitties day after day? There must be a place in hell for these no doubt desperate workers, alongside the beak cutters of baby chicks. Who has decided that there are too many of anything?

That said, she is beautiful and it makes me sad as well that there are uninformed people who don't understand the plight of these beautiful creatures.

It breaks my heart that as we all type these comments this beautiful girl may already be dead. 90%? Have you ever heard of fostering? Or no kill shelters? I foster kittens and I know how tough it can be but it is do-able. Euthanasia is the quick and easy way out and I think that is what Darcy was trying to say. It is wrong and these wonderful animals didn't ask to be born and who are you to randomly decide who dies? I know you get too many but there has to be a better way than murder! Check out Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. Maybe they can help you change your policies.

Precious baby girl Tortie, with the milk face. She is so adorable. It saddens me to think about the euthanasia, but maybe the catties are better off, than having no one to care for them. I wrestle with that question all the time.

Thank you, JudyMack and MrsKitton. I said the PHOTOS were creepy, not the cat. Enlarged pupils on a cat suggest she is a bit afraid or wary. My caption referred to the line, "I see dead people" from The Sixth Sense. She and her babies are in a "shelter" where cats are killed and she wants to be rescued!

I hope this kitty makes it out of the shelter alive. Knowing that so many animals get put to death each year is definitely the sad aspect of rescuing, caring for and otherwise trying to help abandoned, neglected, injured animals. It's like a knife to the heart and the situation could be so much better if people would spay or neuter their pets. It would also be helpful if people would adopt rather than buy from breeders. This is my opinion.

If I were God for a day, I would do two things - one has to do with girl stuff and the other is that I would give all people great empathy so we could not hurt each other or the non-Homo Sapiens we share the planet with, either actively or passively by inaction. The best photos I've seen on GMK are usually from those breeders who are creating beautiful, special furbabies for people who are willing to take care of them. (Notice my poor photos of Miss Gray!)
At the same time, I, too, want people to rescue animals from shelters instead of "buying new."
