Gus [redux]

Shayna says: I got Gus when he was nine weeks old and only weighed two and a half pounds. We found him hiding in a hole in a basement stairway with one of his brother or sisters (who we couldn't catch). He was one of four new kittens in a local cat colony. At first he was so scared of people, but he quickly warmed up into the outgoing one-year-old Gus he is today.

Your kitten has mittens! Gus is a polydactyl or Hemingway tabby cat. Just a cute little boy whose eyes spell mischief. Bless you for giving Gus a forever home. Give him a belly rub for me:)

Beautiful kitty.

I never comment on here, but wanted to say please don't let him scratch that pole and make sure you re-cover it. It looks like the usual asbestos insulation from the 50s used on hot water pipes. It is very dangerous and carcinogenic for humans if disturbed. I may be wrong of course, but you should check it out.

It is nice you were able to rescue Gus. Too bad the other kittens could not be captured. Polydactyl (multiple toes) are popular and they would have adopted out quickly. Gus is a charming cat and I'm sure he fills your days with plenty of joy.

I wanted to reiterate the warning on asbestos pipe wrap. I'm a former historical preservation contractor, that's what it looks like to me also. The flaking could be a serious health hazard. Please have a professional look at this.

Ah, so cute! I have a feral cat colony in my backyard (there when we moved in) and out of four three are polydactl. We worked with feral cat coalition to fix them.
I so love their big paws!!

I guys--the wrapping on that pipe is long gone so don't worry! That was pre-renovation in that bathroom and we don't even live in that apartment any more. At the time I got Gus, the renovation was just getting underway, and his antics sped the whole thing up (the flaking scared me too!). The insulation was removed and the pipe covered in foam instead. Thanks all for your concern!
