Eva says: Even though I already have four cats of my own, I volunteer for several animal shelters and rescues, such as City Critters, and sometimes I take in foster kittens. Little Anabelle was one of a litter of three that I fostered recently, along with her sister Lucy (a grey tabby) and her brother Simon (all black). Lucy was adopted first. Anabelle and Simon went together to a wonderful home... but I was heartbroken because I had this amazing relationship with Anabelle. The entire time she was in my home she did not leave my side for a minute. She would sit on my lap and purr so loudly I couldn't hear my thoughts! She helped me with computer work, slept with me, watched me taking a shower, and insisted on sitting on my shoulder when I ate, read, or watched tv. Her sis and brother were very nice as well, but this one was really special. She was much smaller and thinner -- probably the last one born? And those mittens! To die for! I soooooo wanted to keep her. But I knew I couldn't be selfish and have six cats in a two-cat-lease apartment. A perfect adopter came forward to adopt her and her brother. The man and his wife are cat lovers and their cat of 17 years had passed away and they wanted to fill the void. Anabelle will have a good life for sure. Will I without her? Should it matter? I should really focus on her well-being. Anyway, I cried for a few days and cherished the sweet memories. Her new name is Emma. She has a great home and I still miss her. Why is life so hard?

What sweet little ones- and Annabelle is really small compared to sister Lucy! One probably doesn't hear much about the foster kitties previous homes but it looks like someone cut kitty whiskers where they were before... Thank goodness they grow back! :)

@CqrolB57: When I was 4 y.o. I gave my cat Patsy a 'haircut' by clipping her whiskers. Amazingly, this 1/2 Siamese was remarkably calm, instead of taking my arm off. Thankfully, her whiskers grew back and my parents taught me not to do this again. Patsy & I were great friends for years. Thank goodness our furfriends are so forgiving!

Picture should be titled "Sharing Secrets". You are a good photographer! Annabelle is a cutie and a half and I love her mittens! As a former fosterer of several homeless cats over the years, I know all too well what you went through placing Annabelle. For me, there was a very petite calico I named Betsy. She too followed me everywhere outside, was so loving, and such a little character. I loved her very much. My now ex (yes there is a God) wouldn't let me bring her in the apartment with our other two cats so I made a little house for her outside. Nevertheless, winters are cold in Portland, OR and I wanted very much for Betsy to have an inside home. Betsy and two other homeless cats I was feeding had to wait six months to get into the Oregon Humane Society. Days before a bad cold snap, their turn came up and I took them to the "no kill" shelter in early Dec 09. I hated giving her up yet I had to do what was right for Betsy. She deserved more than living outside in a converted plastic storage container. Almost four years later and I still tear up if I think of her for very long. She'll always be my baby and when I make the transition beyond the veil I'll be with her again. Its hard doing what is right sometimes. Bless you for fostering the kitties you do and making a difference in their precious lives.

Yes, Eva. You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you'll get what you need. Words of wisdom from the Rolling Stones! You did right by Annabelle/Emma and thank you!

Here she's sticking her tongue out and looking adorable. Eva or anyone, care to guess why the tongue is out? Eva knows her best. Lots of people assume that cats "forget" to pull their tongues back into their mouths. I don't think cats forget anything about their bodies. I gather that dogs cool off by sweating through their tongues. But cats? It's a mystery to me.

Yes it is hard to give them up sometimes! I foster and there have been many times when I have become smitten with a kitten. I have cried all the way to the vet's office to give them back and let them find their furever homes but I am resigned to the fact that I can't keep them all because there are so many more that need help. I have had my special babies and I still wonder where they are today and hope they are happy.

I understand what you went through too. But I always feel good knowing they went to great homes.
Would Anabelle's mommy and daddy let you visit with her?

I took in two feral kitties and sas lucky enough to get to keep two (of 11) - for me and my sister. We had taken in their pregnant mommy and another one and they are both fixed and live with us.

I'm sure Anabelle will always remember her special Mommy.

I feel for you. I watched feral kittens in my backyard grow from 3 days on... pulled them in to tame them at 5 weeks and just gave two away to a good home, together. It's a coworker/friend so I can visit. I love those kittens so much but as much as I miss them have to remember they have a good forever home. I am keeping one so have 4 cats now. Now will work with Feral Cat Coalition to fix Momma kitty. I have already fixed the rest of the cats in the colony so my colony will be contained!
