Laurane says: My boyfriend and I are both cats lovers. That's why we naturally looked for a cat when we moved in together six months ago. One day my mother told me she heard from her brother-in-law that a woman in a small village near our homes (in Switzerland) had a cat who had kittens. She had five kittens at first, and because they lived in a farm, they put down three of them because they couldn't afford to keep them. So we went to see the kittens and literally fell in love with them! My parents took one of them, and my boyfriend and I took Kiwi. Since one month he lives with us and adapted pretty well to his new life. He's extremely vigorous, cuddly, and a bit crazy. We play a lot with him because this little furry ball has a great need of affection. He's our baby and we simply love him!

omigod - they killed some of the babies! I believe it - and I know it happens- but I simply can't fathom that kind of behavior. Tiny Kiwi is a fuzzy wonder and it's easy to see why he's so loved.

What a sweet little doll baby! I can't believe that people would do such a horrible thing. I grew up on a farm and we never did such a thing. Sometimes Mother nature took things Her own hands, but never something like that. How awful! So glad you and your parents each saved their little lives!

How horrible that someone would have killed off kittens because of affordability. Thank you for rescuing this sweet baby!! He's adorable =)

I can't understand how people could be so cruel as to kill such beautiful creatures. If people can't afford kittens then they should have their cats fixed, or don't have a cat to begin with. It's just too easy for some people to have pets...
Anyway, at least this little love and his sibling have loving homes. :) I'm happy there's some good out of such a horrible story.

This was hard to take--"farrowed," "killed three," etc. I know farmers have a rough time, but to equate kittens with pigs raised for slaughter--oh well, let's look on the bright side--Kiwi is adorable. I must rethink my position as a carnivore. Let kitties eat meat!

Such a cutie. So glad you and your parents took in 2 kitties. But so sad the people put down the other kitties because they couldn't afford them. Wish they would have tried to find homes for them longer or asked others to help with feeding until they could find homes. That's so sad!! Your kitty is obviously lucky.

Kiwi is the cutest! I love his little pink tongue - he looks like such a cuddle boy.

What a horrible story for his three siblings. What monster could do such a thing to innocent kittens? At least she could have tried to find them homes. Fortunately there are people like you and your parents who rescued the two. Please post photos of Kiwi's sibling!

I love this kitty- but would like to encourage understanding of the perspective of many (obviously not all) farmers. Not condoning such actions but let's try to understand rather than condemn. I am as sentimental about animals (if not more so) than everyone who posts here but coming from a farming background I know how many farmers came from a culture of practicality and limited, scarce resources. They had no choice but to be more practical and less romantic about animals than we can be now. So their approach, while no longer understood by most of us who are removed from that level of scarcity is tough to condone, but let's understand and educate rather than condemn.

Kittylover2, I am glad to know that not all people instantly condemn others for situations of which only one side is known. When I was young my moms cat got pregnant and gave birth to her fourth litter. Up until this point she had nothing but healthy intelligent kittens, but this litter was different. of the litter of 4, 2 were diabetic 3 were malformed (born with too many or too few limbs), only one was healthy. If we had been able to spend thousands of dollars on each of the kittens, they could have lived long lives, but we could not afford that (so few can.) We tried to adopt them out but no one wanted the sick ones. Then we tried to give them to the pound but they wouldn't take them. We ended up having to put 3 sweet kittens down, because we couldn't afford to take care of them. It was a horrible situation, and I still feel guilty about it. I realize some people have never been in that situation, and I hope they never are, but the diabetic ones would have died a slow and painful death and the one who was just malformed, couldn't properly feed himself. I know its horrible to contemplate, but I think we did the best thing we could.

Kiwi is adorable and one of the lucky ones - were it that people would be responsible enough to have their animals SPAYED or NEUTERED then there would be no unwanted kittens or puppies. Surely, or at least I would hope, Switzerland offers low cost - possibly even free services to those on low incomes? If not, they should! And lastly, if you cannot afford to take care of your animals, you should not have them to begin with. Sorry, my rant for the day!

Unfortunately agree with the folks who are appalled that kittens were killed - if you can't take care of kittens, you should spay your cat! How unfair! God bless you & your parents for saving the last two - this little guy is a doll!

This little cattie, all snuggled in and sleeping is one of the lucky ones. Why wasn't the mother cat spayed? There would not have been any killings if the farmers acted responsibly. I am glad that 2 catties made it, but the story from there sickens me.

I agree the responsible thing is to spay/neuter a cat, but when faced with the results of not doing so, please try other options like St0rmE, before putting the kittens down.

St0rmE, don't feel guilty. You tried other options before you resorted to putting them down. I hope the mother cat was spayed after that fourth litter.

What a cutie! And for someone from NZ (NZers are often referred to as Kiwis), how could I resist the name! Kiwi is adorable, but what a shame the others were put down without first trying to find loving homes for them. Glad Kiwi and one other survived.

that all with in reason if they are sick or deformed with little hope ( don't forget to pray to god they are well)then letting them suffer is wrong but if you cant afford them let the mother feed them then let then catch mice to eat or when old enough give them away for free its harder to give a kitten away when you put a price on it even if you want the money which i think is wrong unless you do it for a living god bless those kittens

Please try to understand where StormE and Kittylover2 are coming from. This is a multicultural, multinational site. Being part of our community means practicing tolerance. While I didn't exactly grow up on a farm, when we moved from New York City to South Florida in the 1950's, it was very much a rural/farming community. If a family couldn't afford something, then they did without. Period. StormE, please let go of the guilt. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for the ones we love (kittehs AND people!) is to release them from their pain and let them go.
Huscheli -
Well, if they lived in a poorer country, I would understand, but in Switzerland even farmers "could" afford to neuter their cats. The problem is that they don't want to, because most cats are somewhat "feral" and the farmers don't feel too responsible for them and killing kittens is cheaper than neutering. Oh well...I'm happy to see Kiwi got rescued and one of her siblings too :)
HelenCrump -
I thought Switzerland was a very progressive country. Strange that the Kiwi's owner didn't even mention the prospect of spaying. People's attitudes toward cats still have a long way to go, apparently.
Kali -
Here's my issue: you're all looking at the situation and separating animals from people. Why? Why do we think human beings are better than any other type of animal? If you are able to consider animals equal to humans, which you should be able to, then look at it this way: would a farmer kill his wife's babies because he couldn't afford to take care of them? Most likely not. So why do the same to other babies, particularly from a mother that cannot speak our language and cannot stand up for her children? All animals deserve the same rights as humans, whether it be a pig or a cat, and treating them as anything less is what is TRULY horrible. If we treated cats as equals, we wouldn't be treating them so cruelly, and the same goes for every other animal in existence.

here you can't adopt a Cat without having them spayed. and my Cats have all been relatively cheap. aside from my one Kitty having the URI. Which we spent 300 to save her. but it was well worth it. you'd do it for your child wouldn't you? if it was sick or Mentally Handicap you wouldn't just kill them.
Laurane -
Hello there!
Just to be clear, I totally disagree with that kind of behaviour! That's something I'll never get, but unfortunately, there are many farmers in Switzerland who see diseases spread by cats in their farm and that affects other animals like cows or chikens. And it would cost them a lot of money to treat them all...
I'm a little bit sorry I mentionned it, I didn't meant to hurt you guys.
Anyway... the important thing is that there are people like my parents and I who are ready to take care of one or two of these little furry balls :)
