Brian says: All of these kittens were born in our garden in Istanbul. In total we have had 14 kittens from three mothers in the last two months. We feed them every day, spoiling them as much as we can. I guess soon they will venture out and go off somewhere else. In our street, most neighbours feed the cats instead of chucking their food away. My neighbour below goes to the nearby restaurant and always asks for the waiter to put the food left over in a bag. That's my neighborhood. I can't speak for the whole of Istanbul.

Look at that gorgeous spotty tummy! What adorable kittens - I have one who has a lot of white on him and those same tabby splotches and he's just gorgeous.
I love the fact you feed these kittens but I also hope someone catches the mothers and has them neutered so there are fewer kittens without homes.
They really are lovely kittens, my favourite colours!

How could anyone pick a favorite picture. I love them all. Your neighborhood is my type of neighborhood since I would be feeding all the kitties and their mamas too. Hopefully someone will be able to give a few of them a home.

"The food man iz cumin!" A lovely bunch of ferals. living the harsh, free life but fully equipped with a loving Mom and helpful neighbors. May they do well, since we can't save them all. They are little gems.

Sweet. But without wishing to rain on the parade, so many strays should not be allowed to happen. Maybe starting a campaign to spay and neuter strays in your neighborhood would be a worth while action?

Like others, I support and appreciate that folks are helping feed and watch over these cats, but this is the lazy way to feel good about one's self.

Round up the mothers and get them fixed. Round up the kittens and get them fixed.

Living on the streets is a tough life for all these catties. Please Please have the neighbor spay and or neuter these catties. The catties have to scrounge for food and there is fighting amongst them, especially when the girls are in heat. I am glad that people are feeding them but they would all be far happier with out all the hassles of having to exist having to live outside. Poor Momma here, looks like a baby herself!

Hello everyone ,thanks for the comments and big thank you to Andrea for posting these.
Let me say I hear some of you clearly , but big but ,I am not lazy far from it ,in the last two weeks I have rescued 3 kittens ,2 were less than a day old abandoned on a rooftop during a storm ,mother had given birth during the storm she moved below to give birth to another 3 that morning.
You have to live here in istanbul to understand, there at least at a guess a million wild street cats here in the city. every day i go out into the city and i could come home with 50 kittens a day right now has it is the season.
me and my wife have a cat called Fistik ,chinchilla breed rescued 6 years ago dumped on the street, she is not the friendiest of cats in fact she never goes out .me and my wife do all we can to comfort the kittens ,many had eye infections we got antibiotics for them .
we have to be strong minded not to stop at every kitten we see ,we do what we can along with the neighbours .at another guess probably 150 cats in our neighbourhood alone. dogs rarely venture into the street as the cats attack them in groups ,you see these are pure wild street cats, long legs and muscular appearance far from the homely friendly cat most all have short hair . I guess you have to live here not a 2 week vacation to understand.
so there you are we do what we can with our hearts ,we feed them ,we clean them,we nurse them but soon these will venture off .
as for the mother of these you cant get near her she is ferocious and frequently hisses at anything near her .
anyway hope you enjoyed the photographs there are many more happy moments at my blog ,

brian...

Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures with us and for calling attention to the plight of these cats. I admit I saw the photos with somewhat of a sinking heart this morning since I know how this group responds. They are very much lovers of cats (as am i with 4 rescue cats) but are not always kind to humans who show them a different view of the world. I appreciate and admire your work and I understand the challenges you face in the process of going through the streets of a city that is overrun with strays and where there may well not be facilities to perform the sorts of spaying and neutering that is required. It is a big world and within it is a wide range of attitudes toward animals. Some are hard for those of us in parts of the US to accept and I fear we too often take it out on the one who brings the message, although I hope that at some point people do learn a little about the range of attitudes and challenges diversity brings. I for one really do appreciate your work and your photographs and the education you have provided for those who read this list (or that I hope you have provided). Thank you and don't feel bad!

once again I say it ,we do what we can with our hearts , perhaps those that wanted to judge us and call us lazy should focus and address the EUTHANASIA program used in america ,that is far more shocking than the photographs above.

Brian - I'm sure none of the many good people here are judging you badly. It sounds like you and your neighbors are doing the best you can. You're doing more than a lot of people I know. And I want to thank you for it.

A lot of us in the U.S. are trying to do something about the programs here -- setting up and donating to "no kill" shelters and the TNR programs. Some day I hope we have more people who act HUMANELY and we can fix the problems.

Everyone should also remember that just because a cat is feral doesn't mean they're homeless and alone.
Lindsay -
Adorable!!! The ignorance of some of these comments bothered me quite a lot! While I fully support TNR programs, I think we should understand that most communities in the world simply don't have the resources for this sort of thing. Please don't rush to judgement!
Juliet's Mom -
I was in Istanbul recently and was initially startled by the large number of street cats. Then I was really pleasantly surprised by how friendly and well-fed the ins I met were. They were mostly veery willing to play with me, sit in my lap, and often weren't interested in food (they were full already from local shopkeepers). A friend I met, an American who married a Turkish woman and emigrated after 9/11, said that generally he observed Turkish citizens treat cats very well. Almost no dogs to be seen. I made friends with a little pregnant torte on the grounds of the Topkapi palace and when I got home I thought of her and adopted a Turkish Van mix from a shelter. In a way I wanted to honor her in the only way i could, since I couldn't tuck her in my carryon luggage. :)

Sorry for typos--darned iPad not letting me scroll up to edit

I am glad to tell you all that these 5 kittens are growing rapidly ,whilst the mother has not been seen for the last month they have adopted another mother who sadly had lost all her 5 kittens .it is relly quite amazing to still watch these kittens daily and how they inherited another mother ,who calls out and they come running ,spend the afternoons all snuggled up to each other for a siesta .a stray ginger kitten has joined the pack so we now have 6 healthy kittens still being fed by us all in the neighbourhood.
