Torritt Grey [redux]

Kat says: My first kitty lived to be 18 years old. After she died, I said no more kitties! I love them but didn't want the responsibility. My friend is a foster mom for kittens and they were always so cute and adorable, but I knew I didn't want another kitty and I remained strong in the face of endless available kittens. THEN my neighbor brought home a kitten "for me." I said NO. Then a few days later, I was over at her house and little Torritt kitty walked out to say hello. I told her, "Well, maybe I'll just borrow him for the afternoon..." By the end of the day he had a name, a litter box, and food, and there was no turning back.

When coming up with a name, I wanted something unique and art related because I'm an artist. There is a color of grey oil paint made from recycled pigments called Torritt Grey. It seemed like the perfect name. Torritt loves to hunt. His first catch was a huge blue jay, which luckily got away. Since then there have been three or four little mice, various lizards (he LOVES lizard tails and will play with them for a good week in the house), moths, flies, etc. He spends days down the street in the scrub on a hillside. Sometimes I'll go to "pick him up." He's beyond a fence so I can't actually get to him, but if I call, he'll often come and is always super sweet when he does. Then we'll walk the block back home together. So I have a new cat and no regrets. He has been wonderful company for me and a wonderful muse for my artwork.

One must never, ever, ever, try to borrow a kitten. Something will always come up making you say, "Oh, maybe later" then 15-16 years down the road...you've had the best friend you didn't know your heart missed.

A beautiful story! Your boy is adorable. While in theory I love that he has his freedom, how do you ensure he is safe from outdoor dangers, i.e., cars, predators, etc?

I thought the photos of Torrit were wonderful till I watched the three videos and fell in love with his feisty spirit. Thanks so much for posting this delightful cattie. True, with love comes responsibility, but let's not forget the love part.

Such a lovely little boy and cute story. The love your get in return for your responsibility is so huge! I do wish you'd reconsider letting him play outside. For his safety and the safety of the local wildlife, keep your precious boy indoors.

Absolutely prescious!!

Please PLEASE consider keeping your buddy inside. I didn't and my heart was broken forever. Had I kept him inside it never would have happened. I'll never forgive myself.

My new kitties love it inside and they have lots to do and birds to watch outside.

I even take Charlie on walks outside with a harness!

He is a beautiful cattie and I hope you will consider keeping him inside. If your other kitty lasted 18 years outside that is surprising and happily very lucky for you. He will live longer and healthier inside.

What a little sweetie! I laughed at the thought of borrowing a kitten! I would borrow it and never want to return it either! Torritt is gorgeous!

So sad. You can never trust that the rest of the world will love your kitty as you do, so it's a risk every time you let him outside. He could be preyed upon by other animals or cruel people. He could be poisoned by chemicals used in yards he's walking through. He could be hit by a car - such a sad waste of an adorable being. People don't let their dogs or children run wild - I wonder why they disregard their cats so much.

Precious! I agree that it is a big risk to allow a cat outside but you know that area and can gauge the risk. I live in an area where outside cats are abundant and even take care of two feral cats that live in my backyard. I had four ferals when I moved into this house (I moved in and there they were) but one was hit by a car. There is a risk. I can't bring the ferals in though and they wouldn't be happy as indoor kitties at this point.

He is totally adorable. If he loves his freedom, I'd be happy to give him that freedom, even though there is a risk. He looks so very happy, and so very cute.
