Boered says: My Jinxie has some new stepsiblings. When I recently went on a spay/neuter mini-marathon, taking five of my ten semiferal barn cats to be fixed, I couldn't take Fat Kitty or her big sister Samantha because they were already pregnant. While I was busy tending to some new foster puppies, Fat Kitty gave birth to one black-and-white boy, one tabby boy, and one tabby girl. A few days later, Samantha gave birth to one white boy. It amazes me how a dark tortoiseshell cat can have a all-white baby! Samantha and Fat Kitty raised the kittens together from the start, taking turns nursing and caring for them. I planned to spay Fat Kitty and Samantha as soon as the kittens were weaned.

Every afternoon, my little neighbor Gina and her sisters come over to my house. Gina usually plays with the cats while her older sisters help me feed the goats. When Gina found out that I was planning on taking the kittens to the Humane Society where they would have a chance to be adopted, she was heartbroken. Her mother had already said that she couldn’t have a new cat, but Gina told me that she would take one anyway… she’d just have to leave it here at my house all the time. I tried to explain to her that wouldn’t actually be very helpful.

When the day came, I called the Humane Society and told the woman who answered that I was going to bring in four kittens. I asked her what was their chance of getting adopted. She said, “Very good, we only have two kittens in the shelter right now.” So I loaded up the kittens and off I went. I hated every second of the drive there. The poor little things were crying and crying. I kept telling myself that they would have a better life with someone else. Oh, I’d always make sure they had food and water and a warm place to sleep, but if they stayed with me, they’d essentially just be barn cats and they wouldn’t get all the attention and affection they need. So I didn’t waver and kept on going.

When I walked into the shelter, there was only a man there. He said that the woman had stepped out for a minute but he could fill out the release form for me to sign and take the kittens. I don’t know why, but something made me ask, “What are the chances that the kittens will be put to sleep?” Without hesitating, he replied “100%.” What?!! I said, "I thought you were the Humane Society!" Then he told me that they are actually just the county animal control shelter. The Humane Society does not have an office in our county, but they occasionally come in to help out and take a few of the animals that they are certain they can find homes for.

I still couldn’t believe it, so I asked again: “You’ll definitely put them to sleep?” And he told me, yes, more than likely he would. So I scooped up the cat carrier, filled with my little kittens, and told him that I wasn’t going to leave them there. Call me silly, but I had tears in my eyes while I was telling him this. I couldn’t help it. I could not be that heartless and just turn the kittens in just to be killed. The man looked at me like I was a bit nuts and said, “Don’t get mad at me, I’m just being honest with you.” I told him that I wasn’t mad at him, I was just surprised because the woman had told me that they’d get adopted, and all I wanted was for the kittens to find good homes. The man softened up and told me that he doesn’t like his job (he’s actually the one who does the euthanizing), but people are constantly bringing in tons of unwanted dogs and cats and the shelter just does not have room to keep them all. He said that last month alone he had put to sleep over 300 dogs and cats. More than 300! In just a month! And that’s just in this county, which is probably the smallest county in our state. And of all the people that walked into the shelter last month, he said only two actually adopted an animal.

So I took my cat carrier, with my little funny kittens, and walked back out of the shelter. On my way I passed the two kittens in a cage, and then about 20 dogs, all wagging their tails ferociously and barking at me. I sat the carrier down and stuck my fingers through the bars of each kennel. Every dog kissed my fingers and looked up at me so longingly. Then I said a little prayer that somehow, some way, each of them would find a good home, and then I took my kittens back home.

The next time Gina came over, she was surprised to see the kittens since she knew I planned on taking them to the shelter. She was so happy to find out that I didn’t leave them there, especially when I explained why. So I guess the kittens will be staying with me forever (unless I can talk her mother into taking one!). With Gina around, it looks like my kittens won't be just barn cats -- they'll get a lot of love and affection after all. Oh, and I think Jinxie likes to have the kittens around. He finally has someone smaller than himself to pick on.

Your story is why so many people take in more animals than they can manage, and then just a few more. I feel fortunate that the local Humane Society adopts out so many many animals. The flip side is that they do not take animals without an appointment and I couldn't get an appointment for a couple of months. By that time, I found the cat's owners by posting a flyer with a photo.

Every kitten, cat, puppy and dog deserves to know love every second of their lives. Spay & neuter is the only answer to ensuring that more of them will. xoxo

Bless you many times over for bringing the kittens back to their forever home. Unfortunately many people wouldn't have doubled checked as you did. Thank you for printing this story because what some "humane societies" that aren't officially affiliated with a recognized agency, will tell a client that an animal won't be euthanized when in fact they do just the opposite on a regular basis.

All the kittens are so cute and Gina looks so happy holding all the kittens. There is definitely some siamese genetics as the white kitten is a flame point with crossed eyes no less. He may grow out of that as my siamese mix kitten did. Give them all treats for me and thank you again for sharing this heartwarming story:)

Bless you for adopting them, after all! I think barn-home cats do have a good life, being able tp play and chase, and, with people like you, being in for cuddles and intercting with other animals, too. And you are a responsible lving mom, also spaying- neutering them . Gina looks lovely and loving , such adarling help !

I hope Samantha, Fat Kitty and all of the new ones are spayed and neutered now. They will be happier and healthier. Beautiful story - yes, most shelters have no choice but to euthanize. People MUST spay and neuter to break the cycle. Oh, and the white kittens father was probably all white or mostly white. :-) Blessings.

Well hold on, I guess that wasn't all true. (comment above) Snickers was like that when he was BORN, but as he grew up a little, he got darker around his face and tail and ears. I have a feeling that's what will happen to this white kitty.

these are the moments I wish we all would live in some hollywood movie where some grumpy old rich guy would be persuated into turning the place into an animal haven by gina. And all his crumpyness would leave him because the animals would give him so much joy... well at least the last part is no hollywood thing. Thank you a lot for taking care of the cats and kittens in your area and not giving up on these darlings :)

Oh, must wanted to commend you for already having taking all of the other cats to get spayed and neutered. We have feral cats living in our backyard and we trapped all but one to spay and neuter. Now it appears she is pregnant. I will do as you did and keep the kittens if I can't find good homes.
A Walkaway -
The Humane Society in this county claims to be no-kill, but the people at the pound says that they regularly bring by loads of kitties to be killed. The SPCA... will-kill and three different volunteers have said that a cat or kitten only has about a 10% chance of living through the rest of the day when you drop them off.

It's all a non-profit scam in many areas. They don't like cats because they can get more in donations for dogs - dogs are more profitable.

We have way too many kitties ourselves, because of this very fact... and because comfortable people keep dropping off their pregnant females on our street.

Thanks for showing real kindness to those kittens. They're gorgeous, and deserve a life (and love).

How fantastic of you!! Georgeous kitties! For the future, if you or someone you know have kitties who need homes, post ads in pet stores and vet offices. It was magic for me for 11 kitties! Used bright colored paper and to each attached a full-color photo I'd printed. THEN, I included my YouTube name so people could watch videos of the adorable kids rolling around and just being kitties! It didn't take long at all. I pre-interviewed people, and met them before I decided if they were worthy.

I used this method on 3 separate occasions and all my kitties found great homes! (Kept two though!)

Best wishes to all of you!
~ Nancy :)

Breaks my heart that the "Humane" Society pounds continue to put babies to sleep. I had the same experience & in 2 different cities! Made me so mad that I joined a foster group for several years. Wonderful experience, recommend it to anyone wanting to make a difference.

Thank you so very very much for having the love in your heart to keep these precious babies! I foster and I know how hard it is to find good homes for these babies! Fortunately my vet and the local humane society does not kill the babies! I love this picture of the 2 moms together and sharing the love and work of raising their babies! Hope all are spayed/neutered by now.

Beautiful story , but a tragic one too. Too bad that people do not spay/neuter their kittens like you did, then so many would not have to be euthanized! The catties are all so cute. Thanks for taking them back, to your home.

I'm so glad that you kept the kittens. How hard it must have been to walk pass those other animals knowing their fate. I admire your courage. I couldn't have left the kittens either. It's so sad that people don't get their pets neutered and spayed. I makes me want then to have to be the one to put at least one animal down to see how it felt to be making that decission.

this is a late post but i am so glad you did not leave the kittens there. the humane soc in my county says that they keep them a long time and sometimes they do but one little sneeze and thats it. and black ones don't have a chance at all. the feral community that i take care of has birthed 7 that have been removed with their mamas and 1 that was spayed before delivery. that would have been 11 more in this community. what does it take to educate people.
