Kate and Mary say: We live on a cul-de-sac that's near the woods, and I think some people may use it as a place to dump their animals, because we've rescued a lot of stray cats who are friendly and clearly NOT feral.
There are a group of neighbors on our street who keep an eye out for the homeless kitties. We had seen Runway, a calico cat, in the neighborhood a lot, sometimes hiding under bushes or cars. Our neighbor had been feeding her and noticed she was pregnant. On the fourth of July, during a heat wave, our neighbor managed to catch her. She already has a rescued kitty who is not friendly to other cats, so she asked if we could foster the mom cat. She was panting and terrified and we were worried that she might go into labor immediately, but we brought her inside, gave her food and water and a bed, and she soon was calm and purring and very, very happy to be fed.
The beautiful calico was tiny and very thin, not much more than a kitten herself. We kept her for two more weeks, feeding her high-quality kitten food. Her belly kept growing ... and growing ... and finally, on July 20, she gave birth to four big, fluffy, healthy kittens. We had already christened the calico mama "Runway" because of the stripe under her chin, but we decided to name the kittens for characters in the Hunger Games: Katniss (grey), Gale (red), Peeta (buff), and Rue (dilute calico). They are now in an amazingly playful stage, and they're getting lots of socialization from their foster family and from friends who have come to visit. We hope to find good homes for them when they are 10-12 weeks old, around early October, and we plan to get Runway spayed and find her a home as well, maybe with one of her kittens.
We started a blog about our rescue work,
Miri's House Cat & Kitten Rescue. The name comes from Miri, a beautiful and brave mama cat who found her way here in 2011. (the kittens were featured
here). We found great homes for her kittens and adopted Miri, but she was tragically killed by a car last year, so we wanted to name our rescue group in her honor.
People interested in adopting Runway or her kittens can contact us at this email or on the
blog. We do ask for vet references, and adopters must agree to have the kittens spayed or neutered when they are old enough. They can go anywhere in Rhode Island or Massachusetts, or probably even further for a really good home!
