Kelly says: Scout was found wandering around underneath my sister's car. Apparently he had somehow gotten up under her car and rode like that for about 20 minutes before she arrived home and found him. She felt very sorry for him because he wanted to be indoors so badly. She told me he would hang on the screen door and cry. This wasn't long after I'd lost my cat Brandy. I'd had her since I was nine and she lived to be 18. I loved her very much and I was uncertain about getting another cat. But when my sister told me about this little guy, I caved.

He came to me all flea-bitten and with ear mites (which were quickly taken care of), and he tore through the house like a little gray devil. He didn't like being petted or picked up and refused to sit on my lap. Brandy, on the other hand, had been very sedate and affectionate. At first, I wasn't sure if this was going to work out. But Scout still lives with me in my apartment. He is an amazing jumper and sometimes does back flips off the sloped ceiling when chasing a laser beam. His other favorite pastimes include shredding paper, knocking things off of tables, and refusing to do anything I say. He still hates being picked up or held, but he does sleep every night at the foot of my bed and sometimes he lets me pet him for more than a second. Scout is a little bit of a monster, but he makes me laugh and keeps me company, and I do love him.

Man, I wish something that cute would come out of my printer!

Scout is magnificent. At first glance, I would have guessed he is a Bengal or Bengal mix. When I read about his antics and athletic ability, I thought it's even more likely that he is at least part Bengal, even though he was a stray. His paws have the look of Bengal paws, and his eye color is consistent with some of the Bengal colors. One thing to consider is his voice. Is it LOUD, and does he use it CONSTANTLY? ;-D Whoever his daddy was, he is an adorable little guy!

You can be sure that Brandy picked him out for you. She knew you would be the perfect momcat to take him in and give him a life of love, allowing him to be himself. give him time. It took us over 8 years for one of our Bengals to let me pick him up for longer than an instant. He adored me, but we had to interact on his terms.

h! One more Bengal-esque quality about him ~ the sort of brick color of his nose leather. That's a traditional Bengal quality too.

Scout is such a beautiful, magical cat. I had a kitty named Scout whom I miss terribly, so it was lovely to see another well-loved cat with the same name. A wonderful surprise on my birthday! Thanks for sharing.

I have had a couple ferals that just wanted nothing to do with people, but with enough patience and enough treats, (and providing they're young when you start!!) they'll turn a round. My Riga was completely wild, but now he's a cuddler - didn't happen over night.

I applaud the fact you kept him regardless of his less-than-friendly attitude (and by "friendly" I mean pet-able, lap-cat stuff).

I have the same deal with two of four feral kittens we rescued and kept. We can't pet them, but they are safe and sound, which is what is important.

Kelly, what a wonderful story and such a happy ending for Scout and you. I agree, Brandy, probably picked out Scout for you to take into your home. You took such lovely close-up shots of Scout. He is truly a beautiful kitten and he cleaned up so nicely!

I have two ferals - it took almost two years to get Eddie on my legs to pet and I did it about ten minutes a day. The Girl Cat still resists carrying but if you go very slowly they will let you hold them. They both sleep on me or the pillows when it's time for bed. Scout is adorable.
